FallowMe is an expansion of the concepts developed first in SharedSpace. The application shared here was developed to look at the challenge of encouraging mixed vanilla agroforestry in Madagascar, and offers players the opportunity to crop vanilla (high value, subject to price shocks), other fruits and vegetables (lower value, lower risk of shock), or leave land in fallow vegetation. Soil health declines with extended cultivation, requiring fallowing to be restored; soil health restores more quickly in cells surrounded by long-standing, mature fallow. Land cells may have private, semi-private, or community land rights, so that FallowMe provides an environment to explore different solutions to achieving objectives such as ecosystem service provision or equitable production, whether high value or low risk.
